Dear St. Paul Families and Friends,

There are a number of important updates and announcements in this week’s newsletter. Please take a few minutes to read and stay up-to-date with all that is going on.

    ILLNESS UPDATE:
We have had multiple cases of flu at St. Paul. Several of our friends are out today with fever, confirmed flu, or confirmed strep. While we are sanitizing as often as we can, and staying diligent with hand washing, students and staff have likely already been exposed. Please keep a close eye on your child for signs of illness. Many students simply don't feel good, or complain of headache and/or stomach ache, with no fever, before a VERY RAPID onset of high fever and obvious illness. In order to help curb any outbreak, and to allow for scheduling appointments and beginning treatment, parents will be contacted at the first sign of illness here at school and may be asked to pick up their child even without a fever. Remember students must be fever-free WITOUT MEDICATIONS FOR 24 HOURS before they can return to school. Thank you for helping us keep our students, staff, and their families at home as safe as we can!

    C-O-N-G-R-A-T-U-L-A-T-I-O-N-S!
We are thrilled to congratulate our competitors for a job very well done at Friday’s Spelling Bee! These students (and teachers and families) worked diligently to prepare to compete against other central Texas Lutheran schools – Cross, New Braunfels; Immanuel, Giddings; St. Paul, Serbin; Zion, Walburg; and Redeemer, Austin. When all was said and done, our own Lions claimed the overall championship for the third year in a row! Kudos to the following students for advancing to the final round and placing in the top three:

    • Grade 3: Grant Van West (1st), Ethan Schramm (finals), Garrett Schramm (finals)
    • Grade 5: Bella Qualls (2nd)
    • Grade 6: Emily Reeves (2nd) and Madison Masek (3rd)
    • Grade 7: Natalie Newton (2nd) and Harrison Bender (finals)
    • Grade 8: Emmerson Fisher (1st) and Chloe` Qualls (finals)

    SURVEYS:
The beginning of the calendar year is also the time we begin to look at next school year. Two very important issues guiding our planning are a possible Mother’s Day Out program for two year-olds and classroom ratios for our elementary grades. In order to plan, we will send surveys to current school families regarding these issues. Your feedback is extremely important. If you receive a survey (emailed) please take the few minutes to read and reply. Registration for next year is slated for early March.

    CALENDAR UPDATES:

    • Tonight: Meeting for Washington, DC trip (spring of 2019) at 6 PM in cafeteria. This trip will include our current Grade 6-7 students. At least one parent per student is asked to attend, as we discuss the new format of this optional opportunity.

Unsupervised students who are not playing that afternoon, cheering, or watching the game with an adult will be checked into the after school program. This allows us to keep all students safe and supervised, until they are in the care of a parent/guardian.
    • Keep in mind that students participating in activities after school should be picked up at the scheduled end of the activity. Volunteer coaches are asked to not leave until all students are picked up, and we want to minimize their time waiting.
    • Lion athletes/families should book their hotel room for the state tournament ASAP. Information was emailed to families or posted on BAND. Contact School Office for more information.

Dear St. Paul Families and Friends,

This week was going to be a special one for Mrs. Garcia. She planned to enjoy her baby shower and say goodbye to her students, but this week quickly became special for another reason. Aaron James Garcia decided to make an early appearance this past Sundaymorning! Mom, Baby Aaron, and the entire Garcia family are doing well. We praise God for the miracle of life and the gift He has bestowed upon the Garcia family. Mrs. Williamson and Mrs. Melcher will be covering the middle school this week, as we wind down the semester and continue to practice for our Christmas Eve program.

    Special encouragement:
One of our young couples at St. Paul, Harli and George Stefek, are leading a course for Financial Peace University this January in Thorndale. Melanie and I did an earlier edition of this back in 2005 when Pr. Mann was the facilitator. It was amazing. Every married couple, those planning to marry, or even young adults should strongly consider participating in the course. Not only does this program present knowledge to change you, it provides a peace that spills over into all aspects of your life. The nine-week course startsSunday, JAN 7 at 5:30 PM (in the East Wing). Childcare can be provided for parents of young children. For more information, call Harli at (512) 992-9675 or register/purchase your course materials at http://www.fpu.com/1051613.

Don’t forget! The DVD’s from our recent Christmas Musical are here. These DVD’s contain all performances from the Friday, DEC 1 show (Pre-K through 8thGrade). Copies are $5 each, and are available in the office while supplies last.

Dear St. Paul Families and Friends,

You have made this time of year even more special! At a time when studies and media show American parents to be disengaged, distracted with material possessions, or not invested in their children or faith life, we have you. YOU, the families of St. Paul, stand firm in your faith and against all the standard stereotypes of most American parents. Our school families are all in! For proof, one only has to look at our recent special events. Our largest school event, the Chili Supper, was a giant, fun success, which can only happen because of God’s divine will and because our parents and families care. Just three weeks later, we hosted a record turnout for our “Deck the Halls Event,” where we were up to our elbows in Christmas decorations, pizza boxes, and engaged volunteers. Finally, to top it all off, we saw everyone at the musical, a wonderful opportunity for our students to share the good news of Christ’s birth with their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and neighbors. Thank you for taking the time to enjoy their special moments on stage.

YOU make the difference. This is your school. She belongs to God and you. She exists for God’s will and for your children’s benefit. She is a giant Christian co-op to accomplish what none of us could accomplish on our own. Being a Christian parent, a real, active Christian parent, takes dedication and intentional effort. After all, we know our children grow up to follow the example of their parents. Thank you for stepping forward in faith with us. We pray that through your intentional efforts and through our program, your child will grow in Christ daily.

DVD’s will be sold as soon as we get them for $5 each (before or after the Christmas break).
    • Don’t forget the cookies! Immediately following the Christmas Musical is the “Great Cookie Reception” in the east wing, for all of our guests! All St. Paul families are asked to bring cookies before the show. 3rd Grade parents have reached a special milestone, and will host the reception, with directions and encouragement from experienced Lion parents.

    DUE TOMORROW:
Christmas Eve Service permission forms (sent home this week). Please return to your student’s teacher by tomorrow, so that script prep and planning may begin.

    DUE TOMORROW:
Sky Ranch Camp registration form (sent home yesterday) is due tomorrow. Late entries for Sky Ranch will not be accepted by their scholarship committee.

    DUE FRIDAY:

Please have your Lion try on their uniform to check sizing, especially the jersey. Dear St. Paul Families and Friends,

We are saddened by the news of the passing of Novaline Woelfel this morning, a lifelong member of St. Paul and beloved grandmother to our own Mr. Moss (and great-grandmother to three Lion students). Grandmothers are extra-special gifts to us, and we give thanks for and celebrate the love and life of both Mrs. Woelfel and Mrs. Kalbas’ grandmother, who passed away last week. It is a blessing to have strong connections through these generations of families, and we pray for peace and comfort in the coming days. Arrangements for Mrs. Woelfel are pending at this time.

Mr. Moss is out of the office today with family. This is a quick recap of important dates and announcements.Friday – School is out at 3:45 PM (regular time). Repeat – we get out at 3:45 PM on Friday. It is NOT an early release.

More students seem to have picked up “something” going around, or are battling allergies. For the health and wellbeing of our students and staff (and our families at home), keep in mind the following policies:

    • If your student is running a fever, they must be fever free for 24 hours without medication, before they can come back to school.
    • Students with a fever (100.4 or higher) or who vomit at school will be sent home.
    • If your student receives a positive strep diagnosis, they must be on antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school.
    • Please notify the school office for any diagnosis such as strep, flu, lice, etc. so that we may be aware of the issue and watch for other cases here at school.
    • Any medications, including inhalers and cough drops, must be in original packaging and delivered to the office. Clearly label with student name and specific dosing directions.
    In Him,
    Courtney Fisher
